Sharing the Gospel - Who Me?
I spent a large portion of my Christianity with zero concept that I should share my faith with others. I mean, except for a mission trip to another country here and there. Otherwise, that was for the evangelist and pastor, right?
Romans 10:14–15
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
I had read that scripture dozens of times. But I remember when I read it and realized that it meant me.
It means all of us!
I really struggled with until the Lord made something clear to me:
There are people that He has planned for me, specifically, to touch with His love.
There are people who need to hear it from someone with my experiences, my personality, my way of saying things.
There are people I will meet who need to hear the Gospel that may never step foot in a church or meet one of those amazing evangelists.
I had never thought of it that way.
So, I started asking Him when I went out and found myself in conversations about Him with people I probably would never have talked to otherwise.
Now, hold on, you say...that's fine for you, but I am shy or I'm an introvert.
I've got bad news for you...I am a total introvert. Think...go to a gathering and I am trying to hide behind helping or jobs so I don't have to chit chat.
No, striking up conversations when I feel Holy Spirit encouraging me to do so isn't easy. I never WANT to. But I DO want to show my Savior that I love Him by OBEYING. So, I do it anyway.
No, not all people that I feel led to speak with respond well. When that happens I have to remind myself that they aren't rejecting me but Jesus.
Yes, the times when I speak with someone and I leave knowing that God touched them MAKE IT TOTALLY WORTH IT!
In brief conversations, I have watched people's whole countenance change when they realize that God loves them and sees them, just because I asked if I could pray for them. I have had the privilege of leading people to Christ and praying for healing and see it happen.
I remember one of my first times. I had stopped at a fast food restaurant on a trip. As I ordered my food, I noticed two ladies sitting together by the window. I felt that one was really struggling and I was to offer to pray. I was so nervous it took me a good 10 minutes to work up my courage.
Finally I walked up, introduced myself and asked if I could pray for them. The one lady that I felt I was to pray for glared at me without answer. Her friend awkwardly responded that it would be fine. Looking at the other lady, it didn't feel fine. But I jumped in anyway. The prayer was for both but included some specific prayers for Ms. Angry. At the end, she looked me in the eye - the glare gone - and said sincerely, thank you! I have no idea what God did in her heart but I left there knowing I had obeyed and He would take care of the results!
How to Start
-
Admit that sharing the Gospel means you as well...in your sphere of influence.
-
Ask God to open doors for you to share His love.
-
Look for opportunities as you go about your normal life.
-
If you THINK you should MAYBE talk to someone, assume that is God prompting you and do it! Even if you are wrong, He loves our attempts to follow and obey!
-
Smile, say hello, introduce yourself and let God lead your next words.
